I received an unexpected call from a client I just finished producing a commercial for: “The guys we hired to do a documentary a year ago just dropped the ball big time, can you help us edit it, and be done in 3 weeks?”
The footage that was captured was a jumble of interviews, long form content, and random b-roll. No planned narrative story and no real direction. In reality we were starting from scratch.
Intuitively we engineered three teams of editors, each coupled with a dedicated writer, so they could conceptualize and build at the same time. Each group of editors would take passes on the edit – to keep new ideas flowing – and the unique grouping allowed the editors and writers to quickly establish a clear story with each pass.
+ The team successfully crafted the 9 min documentary, 2 hours of educational course content, and 4 case study videos within 3 weeks
+ The final result produced more than $1.6M for the client and is still used today after nearly 6 years
